Dr. Warren Hern, abortion clinic provider
Full Biography

In 1972, Dr. Warren Hern, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D. returned home to Colorado to serve as a consultant for national and international family planning programs. In 1973, following the Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion, he was asked to help found Colorado’s first free-standing nonprofit abortion clinic. Since November 1973, Dr. Hern has been providing abortion services full-time in Colorado. In January 1975, he opened Boulder Abortion Clinic, his private medical practice.

Since 1971, Dr. Hern has been the author of dozens of medical journal articles, editorials, and many other publications concerning abortion and other aspects of human fertility. In 1988, he received his Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health. He is the author of Abortion Practice, the first and only single-author medical textbook concerning abortion, which was first published in 1984 and which remains in print. In 2002, Dr. Hern received the Christopher Tietze Humanitarian Award from the National Abortion Federation for his advancement of quality care in abortion services.

Later in 2002, he also received the Carl S. Schulz Award from the Population, Family Planning and Reproductive Health Section of the American Public Health Association for his scientific contributions and defense of reproductive freedom.

The National Organization has previously honored him for Women, the National Abortion Rights Action League, and the Colorado Coalition for Choice, the Colorado Women’s Political Caucus, and, in 2003, by Women’s Choice, of which he was the founding Medical Director in November 1973.

About Boulder Abortion Clinic

Most women who seek abortion services at Boulder Abortion Clinic are in their early reproductive years and wish to have children in the future. In addition to a primary concern for patient safety and the avoidance of surgical complications, it is imperative to preserve the possibility of future reproduction for women seeking abortion services. This concern underscores my total commitment to safety in all aspects of abortion care. Learn more about us below.

At Boulder Abortion Clinic we also see an increasing number of women who come to us with a desired pregnancy that has developed tragic complications (fetal disorders). In these cases, the idea of terminating the pregnancy is extremely painful, but the woman and her partner have decided that it is the best choice for the future. We are especially attuned to giving these women and their families the maximum social and emotional support that they need to get through this difficult time.

To these ends, I developed several techniques for late abortion and designed numerous surgical instruments; other physicians now use many of these techniques and instruments across the U.S. and around the world. Continuing research and development of the best and safest ways of terminating pregnancy has been a major goal at Boulder Abortion Clinic since I founded my private practice in 1975.

By its name and continued existence, Boulder Abortion Clinic makes a statement that women are free to make their own choices about their own lives, bodies, and family needs. I have been personally involved from the beginning of my medical career in advocacy of reproductive freedom, and I continue in this commitment. We have survived anti-abortion harassment and violence and shown our determination to provide these services in spite of everything. As a result, our patients are protected by the highest standards of safety and security when they come to my office.

As we have recently observed the 45th Anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision, we know we have done our part to make the meaning of that landmark decision for human freedom a reality for our patients and their families. The true meaning of “family values” is the freedom to choose your own life and values with those you love.

I came in here not feeling too great about the whole thing, but the nurses made me feel, really think about and realize that this doesn’t make me bad because it’s the best thing and it’s my choice. They made me feel better about myself.

I put a great deal of thought in before coming. The staff here was understanding and willing to listen, making the procedure easier to go through. I’d call this a very positive experience. I also appreciated all the info I found on your web site. Learning more about the procedure and Dr. Hern calmed any residual fear/anxiety I had.
